Social Media Day 2017?

30 June is Social Media Day and is celebrated annually. In its short life, social media has redefined how people interact, communicate and share with family, friends and the world..

Friendster was launched in 2002, with MySpace following closely behind in 2003. But, 2004 marked the founding of the king of social media – Facebook. Twitter showed us how to express ourselves in 140 characters or less, and Instagram and Flickr allow us the opportunity to post all the videos and photos we love most.

Speaking of video, YouTube is the social place for everything – from how-to, to pop culture, to what not to do with your fireworks on Guy Fawkes Day.

The internet has been known to love food, and social media is no different. Pinterest , Tumblr and WordPress all make sharing and socializing about the latest food trends, accessible and exciting – probably the most addicting part of social media.

One moment a picture of a decadent, perfectly golden roast duck comes across your news feed, and the next you know, the complete video, detailing how to execute this delicacy in 17 easy steps, is provided for you. One tweet later, and you are off to the butcher!

In a SnapChat-Instagram-Tumblr hour, you manage to destroy your kitchen, and end up with a Pinterest board titled – They lied.

With social media, it has become easier than ever to stay connected to those important people in your life, as well as being informed about the latest trends. Reconnecting with classmates, past work associates and many more, is also a valuable part of social media.

It has also made it possible to connect with ancestors and find relatives you never knew existed. With MyHeritage.com and Ancestry.com – to name a few – you have the opportunity to meet and build family trees.
