Building YOUR Brand's Social Presence?

With most Americans on social media (79% of adults use Facebook), neglecting to establish social media accounts for your business can be a detriment to your business..

On social media sites, business owners can connect with prospective customers, discuss items of interest and build awareness of company products or goals. And the basic costs for doing so are relatively low.

But starting out can be difficult. With so many users regularly publishing on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other sites, how do make sure your own messages are heard? Forbes Agency Council members – experts in marketing, advertising, branding and other specialties – offer their advice for building your social media presences and brand awareness.

1. Always Listen First

First, take a look at what your industry, competitors and community are doing on the main channels. Then you can formulate a strategy for engaging with your community in a way that provides value and positions you properly. Don't start creating profiles and posting until you've taken the time to understand the platform. - Diana Wolff, LRG Marketing

2. Become A Thought Leader

When businesses start on social media, they often think it's just about getting in front of people. But most importantly, it's about educating and inspiring. Know your persona's, focus on the channels they are on and be a thought leader in your space. Always remember to have a personality on social media though. Even if you're a B2B brand, let your culture shine through on your social channels. - Elyse Flynn Meyer, Prism Global Marketing Solutions

3. Don't Just Check The Box

Social media is exactly that: social. Building up your business presence requires knowing who your business is and creating a voice and personality that connects with your target audience. Don't just promote, cite features and benefits, or simply share links or content. Talk with — not to — your fans. When you focus on providing value and building a community, awareness will take care of itself. - Robby Berthume, Bull & Beard

4. Be Consistent

The No. 1 thing a business should be building up on social media is consistency. Garnering attention is hard and when it comes and you're not consistent, you'll lose it. Too many times, brands stop using social because "they don't see results." They need to be patient and consistent while understanding it takes time to build their brand in such a noisy environment. - Chris Ake, Grand Apps

5. Build A Blueprint, Then Start With Awareness

You do a lot of planning and you do a lot of research, so you know where your customers are. Once you understand them, start the blueprint for your funnel. Start at awareness: You can't propose on the first date. All of your initial marketing efforts should be purely directed towards awareness. Branded content strategies are fantastic to showcase your brand in a positive light. - Ahmad Kareh, Twistlab Marketing

6. Identify The Message You Want To Convey

When building a social media presence, we recommend that our clients come to the table with a clear understanding of who they’re targeting and what message they’re trying to convey. As every platform doesn’t make sense for every business, having a clear goal in mind will help inform businesses of where they need to concentrate their efforts. - Jennifer Hawkins, HAWKINS International Public Relations Inc

7. Give Them Access To Looks Behind The Scenes

I tell brands launching their presence on social media to be as transparent as possible. Introduce the staff with images and personalized posts. Take some pictures of the business to show potential clients what goes on behind the scenes. And finally, talk about some of your past success stories. These are the elements your social followers will want to see and know. - Raffi Keuhnelian, INexxus

8. Create A Tribe

Social media is not a marketing channel; it's a platform for making connections, creating circles of influence, providing resources and meeting people online, authentically. It should be looked at as a community rather than a billboard. As such, look to create a tribe of willing advocates and partners — which is far more valuable than clicks and impressions. - Stefan Pollack, The Pollack PR Marketing Group

9. Hashtag Often

The best way to start building a presence and brand awareness is to start using appropriate hashtags in your posts. This makes your content searchable, so users with similar interest can find you. - Leila Lewis, Be Inspired PR

10. Pay To Play

The majority of social media users don't want businesses infiltrating their newsfeed. Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter know this, which is why their algorithms limit a brand's reach with the option to boost or advertise their presence. My advice? Give in. Pay to play. Create content people want to engage with, advertise effectively, and pay to reach customers and prospects. - Brett Farmiloe, Markitors

11. It's Not All About You

Social media is social and relies on engagement. Many businesses treat their social profiles as a megaphone to continually blast their products or services. What they should be doing is commenting, liking and sharing with others in the community to foster relationships first over promotion. - Stormie Andrews, Yokel Local
